MONMOUTH BATTLEFIELD IS STILL OPEN
DESPITE STATE’S FISCAL CRISIS CONTINUES
Monmouth Battlefield State Park continues to be open regular hours, in spite of the state’s continuing fiscal crisis. The Park, though, is still operating on a bare bones staff, as it has been doing for the past two years. Inga Gabliks, Superintendent of Allaire State Park, is also serving as Acting Superintendent at Monmouth, and has office hours at the Park only one day a week because of her other duties. Dr. Garry Wheeler Stone, long time Park Historian, is able to be with us full time at the moment. Don Ward, the Seasonal Interpreter, has been ably filling in on weekends and when needed.
At the moment, we know of no plans being made to curtail the Park’s hours or even close the Park, so we are going ahead with all our events and activities as laid out in our annual plan. We hope that Governor Christie’s new budget will not contain plans to cut our hours and activities. The Friends and let you know about them in our next newsletter.
PLANS CONTINUE TO CONSTRUCT NEW
EXPANDED VISITOR CENTER AT THE PARK
In spite of the current budget problems, plans are still moving ahead to build a new Visitor Center. Dr. Garry Wheeler Stone updated us on current plans for the new building at our annual meeting in December. Current plans are to keep the Park and a portion of the Visitor Center during all stages of the construction. The first phase will consist of replacing the current snack bar/storage area with a new building containing a new museum, a small amphitheater, offices, and an expanded gift shop. The remaining part of the Visitor Center complex (the museum, gift shop and offices) will remain open during this phase of construction. When this work is done, the current gift shop and museum will be gutted, and the eastern end of the building, along with the offices and mechanical room, will be expanded, while the offices, gift shop and museum move into the completed western wing of the complex. The whole project is slated to cost $6,000,000 and will be paid for with funds already designated from the state’s corporate business tax. Target opening date for the new building is April 2012. We will certainly keep you posted as final plans and the ground breaking date develop.
SCHEDULE OF PRESIDENTS’ DAY WEEKEND
PROGRAM AT THE PARK ON THE
ROLE OF BLACK TROOPS IN THE BATTLE;
BATTLEFIELD WALKING TOURS
As we have done in the past, the Friends will be holding programs at the Park Visitor Center over Presidents’ Day weekend. On Saturday, February 19, and Monday, February 21, walking tours will be held on the
Battlefield. This year the tours will focus on the southern part of the park, specifically the history of the Parsonage Farm and the fighting in that sector. In honor of President’s Day, mention will also be made of the various positions known to have been occupied by General George Washington during the different stages of the battle. Tours will begin with a short background presentation at the Visitor Center at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday and at 1:30 P.M. on Monday. If the weather is bad, substitute presentations will be given at the topographical map in the Visitor Center.
On Sunday, February 20, David Martin will give a presentation on the role of Black troops in the battle. Included also will be information on the role of Native American troops in the battle. This program is being given in honor of February being Black History Month. The presentation will be held in the Visitor Center at 2 PM. The gift shop will also be open, as it is every Sunday from 1-4 PM.
WALKING TOURS SCHEDULED
FOR FIRST SUNDAY EVERY MONTH
This year the Friends has initiated a new program offering regular monthly guided battlefield walking tours. Guided walking tours of the central portion of the battlefield will be offered on the first Sunday of every month. Tours will be offered at 1:30 from the Visitor Center, weather permitting. They will begin with an overview at the topographic map in the Visitor Center, followed by a guided walking tour of the Hedge Row and Parsonage areas of the battlefield. This program is in addition to our regular bimonthly meetings and battlefield tours. In case of inclement weather, the walking tour will be replaced by a discussion of the battle held at the topographic map in the Visitor Center. The first “monthly walking tour” scheduled for January 1, 2011, was cancelled due to the heavy snow fall that struck the area after Christmas. The next walking tours in this program will be offered on February 6 and on March 5.

The next general meeting of the Friends of Monmouth Battlefield will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, located at 125 Symmes Drive in Manalapan (phone 732-431-7220). The meeting will begin at 7:00 P.M. and end about 8:30. The program will be given on the topic “Who was the real Molly Pitcher?” Discussion will be held on the alternate identities put forward over the years as to the possible real person who was actually Molly Pitcher. FOMB member John Fabiano will present the results of
his research on the topic, as will our Vice President David Martin, who is author of the book A Molly Pitcher Sourcebook. This programming is being offered in conjunction with Women’s History Month.
SPECIAL TOUR TO BE OFFERED
ON MARCH 27, 2011:
VISIT THE SITE OF MOLLY PITCHER’S WELL
On Sunday, March 27, 2011 the FOMB will offer a tour of the several sites claiming to be the sites of Molly Pitcher’s Well. We will meet at the Visitor Center at 1:30 P.M. for an overall. Then we will caravan to the heart of the battlefield to visit the different spots that over the years have been claimed to be the location of Molly’s well. The tour will end at the new Molly Pitcher Overlook on Perrine Hill. Participants will be provided with a map of the various proposed well sites from David Martin’s study, A Molly Pitcher Sourcebook.

Without you we would not be able to enrich the Park with our programs, tours, and financial support. If you have already paid your dues for this year, we will so note on the enclosed application.
DATES SET FOR 2011 REENACTMENT
AND FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 233rd ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF MONMOUTH
Plans are set to hold this year’s annual reenactment of the Battle of Monmouth on the weekend of June 18 and 19, 2011.
The Friends will sponsor an additional commemoration of the battle on June 25 and 26, 2011, the actual anniversary date of the battle (which was fought on June 28, 1778).
A complete schedule of the events of the reenactment weekend and the anniversary weekend will be sent out in early June. It will also be posted on our website.
We will also be sponsoring our annual series of programs on “The Revolutionary War in Monmouth County” in June. Lectures and walking tours will be given at the Park on June 5, June 12, and July 3. We will also hold a program at the Monmouth County Library on Wednesday, June 8, as well as a program at the Buccleuch Mansion in New Brunswick on July 4. A complete schedule of events, speakers and locations will be sent out in May.
CRAIG HOUSE STILL CLOSED
The historic Craig House, located adjacent to Route 9 in the eastern section of the Park, was closed during the 2007 season due to a lack of staffing. It was interpreted by volunteers for many years but none were available last year. Unfortunately, the Park has not been able to supply staffing to the site and it has only rarely been open for special events. Anyone who is interested in serving as an interpreter at the Craig House, even just one Sunday afternoon a month, should contact one of the Society’s officers.

ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTIONS
HELD DECEMBER 1, 2010;
HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE INN
AT ENGLISHTOWN DISCUSSED
Our annual meeting and elections, as required by our by-laws, were held on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Thanks go to the officers and members of the Battleground Historical Society for hosting our meeting at the historic Village Inn in Englishtown. The proposed annual plan and budget for 2011 were approved by mailed in ballots, which were opened at the meeting, and vote of those present at the meeting. George Dawson, Joseph Nemeth and Fran Raleigh were elected as Trustees to serve a three year term from 2011-2013. The following were re-elected as officers for 2011: President, James Raleigh; First Vice President, David Martin; Secretary, Michael Cervini; and Treasurer, George Dawson. At the meeting Park Historian Dr. Garry Wheeler Stone gave an update on the plans to expand and redesign the Park’s Visitor Center, and a spirited discussion was held on the role of the Village Inn in the battle and campaign of Monmouth.
During the program we learned that the Village Inn at the time of the battle in 1778 consisted of only the four westernmost rooms in the current building. Generals George Washington and Charles Lee were both at the Inn at various times on June 27, the day before the battle. It is not clear if Washington’s letter calling for Lee’s court martial for his actions at the battle, was written from Englishtown or Spotswood. It is also not clear if there was more than one tavern in the village of Englishtown at the time of the battle. Nor do we even know who was running the tavern at the time; tax record sonly show who owned it.
Did you know that the town of Englishtown is not named for the English people, but after a specific family named English? Tradition relates that three brothers, James, David and Robert English, settled in the area about 1730, and so the village was named after them.

We are sorry to report that long-time trustee Paul Bette has “retired” from his FOMB offices due to his increased responsibilities at work. Paul is also an officer in the Steuben Society and played a leading role in getting the General’s statue erected at the Park several years ago.
We certainly want to thank Paul for all his years of service on the Board.
His term as Trustee will be filled by Andy Beagle. His position as 2nd Vice President is remaining vacant at the moment.
NEW FOMB WEBSITE READY AND UPDATED
We are pleased to report that our new website has been up and running for over six months and has been well received. It contains news about the Park, calendar of our events and programs, and our most recent newsletters.
